I've been thinking a lot about peace lately...
we're constantly being barraged with images of
war, chaos and unrest from so many parts of the
world. The Virginia Tech shootings are still
fresh in the minds of those of us here in the
United States. When I think of these things, my
heart cries out for relief... for somehow, some
way, that we can have peace in our world.
In today's issue, I'm musing further on this in
our Lighthouse article, and discussing ways that
we can indeed bring peace to our world. I
strongly feel that before we can become a united
and peaceful world, we must first find peace
within ourselves, and our own hearts and
spirits. So that's what I strive to do on a
daily basis... would you like to join me?
Until next time, enjoy the rest of today's
issue, and I send you all my love and gratitude!
Love,
Kim
FROM THE LIGHTHOUSE, WITH LOVE
A lighthouse serves as a beacon of hope in a
violent storm. A lighthouse sheds light on our
worries and troubles, and brings us joy and
peace. Therefore, in each Heartsong issue, I
will include an article, which will help to
guide you through the dark and troubled times,
or lighten and brighten your heart and life in a
special way. In today's Lighthouse article,
we're discussing ways of bringing peace into our
hearts, lives and world.
The Essence of Peace
It's difficult to turn on the television or
radio, or pick up a newspaper, without being
confronted with images of wars, chaos and
brutality. These things happen in far distant
countries, in our own states and / or cities,
and sometimes even in our own households. The
feelings of bitter conflict, harsh circumstances
and biting words all have the effect of making
our hearts heavy and our spirits low. We long
for relief, solace and peace. But where, and how
can we achieve the peace we seek?
It is my personal belief that we won't be able
to experience peace in our cities and our world
until we can first learn to experience peace
within our own hearts and lives. Only then can
the true essence of peace and well-being
infiltrate the bitterness, the anger and the
fear that permeates so many hearts and lives.
Only then can others learn from our example and
discover, to their delight that hopelessness can
be replaced with hope, fear can be replaced with
joy, and hatred can be transformed into love.
One way we can bring peace into our own hearts
is to surround ourselves with people and objects
that make us happy. I've always felt that if a
room that I frequently occupy is a beautiful and
serene haven, that my heart, in turn, will also
grow serene just by my being in that room. I
have well-loved photos, prints and objects
sitting around me as I am writing this article.
In the background is beautiful instrumental
music. My interpretation of what is beautiful
may be totally different from yours, so discover
what works for you.
If you can't decorate an entire room to help
bring more peace into your heart, then at least
keep a few objects close to you, which bring you
joy and comfort. These might include family
photos, an angel statue, fresh flowers in a
base, or even a teddy bear. Again, it's whatever
makes you feel most serene. You may also
consider having soft lighting or music, if
possible.
Have you ever noticed that there are certain
people who just automatically bring a sense of
peace and delight into a room with them? I've
always found it important to have some of these
people in my life. They rarely fail to brighten
my day, and put a little ray of hope and
sunshine into my heart. What special people in
your life can you think of right now who bring
you greater peace, just through your association
with them?
Another way to bring vast amounts of peace into
our hearts is to engage in activities that are,
well, peaceful. My idea of a peaceful afternoon,
for instance, includes a good novel and a cold
glass of water or iced tea, with the birds
singing outside my window and a sweet Summer
breeze kissing my skin. Just thinking about it
makes me feel more at peace! Take time to find
activities that help you to relax, and thereby
become more contented and serene.
Lastly, when desiring greater peace within our
lives and hearts, we may wish to devote time to
prayer, meditation and / or reflection.
Connecting with God / Spirit / Creator is a
tremendous way to give over our burdens, lighten
our heavy hearts and rediscover how richly we
are loved. Find a way that helps you to deeply
and securely connect with God, and release all
your fears, doubts and uncertainty into God's
loving care. Some people connect best through
prayer, others through the reading of Holy
Scriptures, and still others through simply
stilling their minds and reflecting. Find what
works best for you, and notice the great peace
that this profound connection with Spirit brings
you.
There's a lovely song that says, "Let there be
peace on Earth, and let it begin with me." Those
sweet lyrics echo my heart-felt wish... that
peace really can prevail on Earth, and that I
may somehow assist others in bringing more
peace, and therefore more hope, into their
lives.
John Lennon penned another lyric that states,
"You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only
one." And it seems fitting to end this article
with Lennon's statement, which closes "Imagine",
since it so aptly sums up my own feelings. "I
hope someday you [everyone on Earth,] will join
us, and the world will live as one."
HOME AND HEARTH
In this section of the newsletter, I will
provide tips to help you to bring your own
creativity, spirituality and unique talents into
your everyday life, and, more specifically, into
your home.
Fairies Dancing
As a little girl, I always delighted in hearing
stories my grandmother (Nanna) had created about
the fairies. I use to amuse myself by making up
wonderful and vivid tales of living with the
fairies out in my yard and playing with them all
day long, and then dancing merrily with them
from sunset to sunrise!
As a matter of fact, thinking about these fairy
stories is still really delightful and wonderful
for me. I guess a part of me is still very much
that vivid little girl who wants to spend her
life dancing with the fairies. And the great
news is, in my imagination... I can do exactly
that!
What wonderful stories did you, or do you still,
tell yourself? What makes your imagination go
into happy overdrive? Enjoy your stories and
imaginings...you're your inner child out to
play! You'll be happier for doing it!
PRAYER FROM THE HEART
Each issue of Heartsong will feature a prayer,
either from my own heart, one which I hold dear
in my own life, or one suggested to me by
others. I hope they will speak to your spirit,
as well.
"Almighty God, the Great Thumb we cannot evade
to tie any knot;
the Roaring Thunder that splits mighty trees:
the all-seeing Lord up on high who sees even the
footprints of an antelope on a rock mass here on
Earth.
You are the one who does not hesitate to respond
to our call.
You are the cornerstone of peace."
Native African Prayer for Peace
HEARTSONG REFLECTION
Until our next issue, find ways to create
peace in your own life. You'll be making a
difference in the whole world's level of peace!
And also remember to let your playful inner
child come out and enjoy life sometimes, too!
Love, Light and Blessings,
Kim
